Abnormal Indivisible Loads (AIL): proposed speed limit increase
Thursday 8th October 2009The Highways Agency is proposing to increase the speed limits for certain AIL vehicles with a gross weight of between 150 and 250 tonnes on motorways and dual carriageways.
The current speed limit of 12mph on all road types was first adopted in the 1940s and has not been updated to reflect the significant advances in vehicle technology. In its consultation, the Agency proposes an increase on motorways and dual carriageways for articulated AIL vehicles to 25mph and for drawbar combinations to 20mph. The consultation closes on 31 October and will be discussed at FTA's October round of Regional Freight Council meetings. Members wishing to discuss this further should contact FTA's Malcolm Bingham mbingham@fta.co.uk
