CHANGES TO ROADWORTHINESS TESTS FROM JANUARY 2012

A new European directive, which must be implemented by 31 December 2011, sets out compulsory items to be included in roadworthiness tests. The directive will affect VOSA's testing and enforcement strategies and it will introduce new items into the UK statutory vehicle test. The statutory test currently covers items relevant to design, construction and equipment but the new directive also concerns a review of additional safety, security and environmental factors. In total, over 50 new test items and new reasons for failure will become part of the annual test. DfT and VOSA are now identifying the best way to meet the requirements of the directive whilst minimising the impact on the length of the annual test.
