Tuesday 10th February 2009

The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has announced that the UK greenhouse gas emissions fell by 1.5 per cent in 2007.

The amount of emissions in the 'basket' of six greenhouse gases under the Kyoto Protocol in 2007 was estimated at an equivalent of 636.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide compared to 647.9 million tonnes in 2006. Carbon dioxide accounted for 85 per cent of total UK greenhouse gas emissions in 2007 and was down 1.5 per cent from 2006. Transport was one of the few sectors where emissions increased - up by one per cent.

Provisional estimates of UK greenhouse gas emissions for 2008 will be published by the end of March 2009.
