Country's satnav black spots identified

Tuesday 24th March 2009

The country's worst 'sat nav black spots', where lorries and buses routinely get stuck after blindly following directions from the popular navigation devices, have been identified in new research.

They have been pinpointed for the first time amid growing unease at the over reliance of many drivers on the technology - and the chaos that often ensues.

In many cases, the problems are caused by foreign lorry and coach drivers using sat nav systems which were designed for cars.

But even British hauliers have faced similar difficulties as they have been guided through totally unsuitable rat-runs by the devices, which use the Global Positioning System developed by the US Department of Defense in the 1970s.

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings says that Britain's historic bridges, buildings and roads are being damaged by drivers blindly following satellite navigation directions along narrow lanes and under bridges.
