Headlamp aim at annual test: new FTA compliance guide

Tuesday 17th February 2009

From 16 February 2009, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) introduced simplification and tolerance changes to headlamp aim tests. The main features of the changes are to:

  • apply a single standard tolerance for all vehicle categories
  • apply the wider category B tolerance standards to all vehicles

Later in 2009 electronic testing of headlamp aim will be introduced.

Headlamp aim is the most common reason for annual test failure on large goods vehicles and passenger carrying vehicles; the failure rate being 20 per cent. The changes aim to reduce the failure rate and improve consistency.

FTA's Headlamp aim compliance guide provides:

  • details of the changes
  • guidance to operators on preparing this aspect of a vehicle for the annual test
