Longer, heavier vehicles: Commission report urges increase in maximum weight and size
Wednesday 28th January 2009A consultants report for the European Commission has urged the EU to increase the maximum size and weight of lorries allowed.
The report looked at three options for increasing truck size and weight, but backed the larger - at 60 tonnes and 25.25 metres.
The Commission will now undertake 'further analysis of the recommendations'. Any plans to raise the maximum size and weight of lorries across the EU would require approval from the EU Council of Ministers and the European Parliament. The Department for Transport's Delivering a Sustainable Transport Strategy - the Logistics Perspective, published in December 2008, left open the door for authorising longer semi-trailers, but rejected longer, heavier vehicles.
