MPs want action on unsafe trucks and buses

Tuesday 25th August 2009

Vosa, the UK government agency in charge of vehicle safety testing, needs more teeth to get unsafe trucks, buses and their drivers off our roads.

Unsafe vehicles, often foreign-registered, cost lives and Vosa must have access to ports to stop them entering the country.  Licensing rules for buses should be tougher too, says the Transport Select Committee in its latest report.  MPs also want VOSA to have better IT systems and information sharing deals with other agencies, such as HM Revenue and Customs.  The Committee also warns against privatising the MoT test centre network for trucks and buses as this could cut access to testing, particularly in remote areas of the country.
