Road infrastructure charging: European Parliament reaches agreement on Eurovignette directive
Tuesday 17th March 2009The European Parliament has approved the 'Eurovignette' directive in its plenary session.
MEPs agreed that hgvs should be charged according to the air and noise pollution they produce. Charging lorries for congestion costs at peak hours (but not cars) would also be possible. However, specific calculation methods and caps on congestion are excluded from the agreement. MEPs also agreed that the revenues generated from the Eurovognette directive should be invested in improving the environmental standards of vehicles and developing alternative transport infrastructure.
