Road Transport Working Time Directive (RTD): self employed update

RTD contains provision for bringing self-employed mobile workers in scope of working time rules from 23 March 2009.

The European Commission has, however, presented a proposal that would continue to exclude genuine self-employed and this is currently being debated by the European Parliament and Council of Ministers. Whilst the deadline for bringing these workers in scope has now passed, the Department for Transport has advised that UK regulations will not be changed to include self-employed mobile workers until the outcome of the EU negotiations is clear.
