Trailers towed by vehicles at or below 3.5t gvw: DfT consults on width increase

Monday 11th January 2010

The Department for Transport is consulting on proposed amendments to the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986

This amendment will increase the maximum width of trailers permitted to be towed by vehicles (other than motorcycles) with a maximum gross weight of 3500kg or less to 2.55 metres - an increase of 0.25 metres. The current maximum width for trailers towed by these vehicles is 2.3 metres.

DfT is proposing this amendment in order to fulfil a European Community obligation on trailer widths set out in European Directive 97/27/EC relating to the masses and dimensions of certain categories of motor vehicles and their trailers. DfT plans to implement this change by the end of March 2010.

The consultation documents can be downloaded here

The closing date for the consultation is 16th February 2010, members wishing to comment on the proposals are invited to do so by email to Andy Mair at amair@fta.co.uk
