Vehicle safety features: DfT consults of Commission's General Safety Proposal

The Department for Transport is consulting on proposals by the European Commission to introduce a wide range of features that will reinforce vehicle safety and reduce the environmental impact of road transport. Specifically, the proposal intends to:
- simplify the existing vehicle safety type approval legislation
- require the mandatory fitting of some advanced vehicle safety features (electronic stability control, advanced emergency braking system, lane departure warning system)
- enhance the environmental performance of vehicles by reducing the amount of road noise and vehicle carbon dioxide emissions associated with tyres
