Vehicle safety features: DfT consults of Commission's General Safety Proposal

The Department for Transport is consulting on proposals by the European Commission to introduce a wide range of features that will reinforce vehicle safety and reduce the environmental impact of road transport.

The Department for Transport is consulting on proposals by the European Commission to introduce a wide range of features that will reinforce vehicle safety and reduce the environmental impact of road transport. Specifically, the proposal intends to:

• simplify the existing vehicle safety type approval legislation
• require the mandatory fitting of some advanced vehicle safety features (electronic stability control, advanced emergency braking system, lane departure warning system)
• enhance the environmental performance of vehicles by reducing the amount of road noise and vehicle carbon dioxide emissions associated with tyres
