DVSA announced on 20 March 2020 that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is suspending heavy vehicle testing (MOTs) of all PSVs, HGVs and trailers for up to 3 months from 21 March 2020.
All HGVs, trailers and PSVs with an annual test due to expire will be issued with a 3-month certificate of exemption (CTE) until further notice.
In most cases, your vehicle or trailer will be automatically be issued with a 3 month certificate of exemption, and you do not need to do anything. You do, however, need to apply for an exemption if your vehicle fits into one of these categories:
How you apply depends on which category your vehicle fits in and further guidance can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-mots-for-lorries-buses-and-trailers
Vehicles and trailers must still be maintained in a fit and roadworthy condition (your safety inspections, drivers’ daily defect reporting and other maintenance systems are key in this regard) and you must continue to operate within the terms of your Operator’s Licence.
