In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in recognition of the fact that operators might be unable to access maintenance facilities and therefore maintain vehicles and trailers at declared safety inspection intervals, the Traffic Commissioners issued temporary guidance, relaxing the requirements relating to safety inspection intervals, which allowed operators to adopt a risk-based approach to maintenance (further information about the relaxations can be found by clicking here).
The Traffic Commissioners have now announced that the temporary relaxations of maintenance inspection intervals will end from 1 September 2020 and the Senior Traffic Commissioner has updated the ‘Advice: Heavy Goods and Public Service Vehicle Operators: coronavirus (COVID-19)’ document (which can be accessed by clicking here) to reflect this.
From 1 September 2020 onwards, all vehicles and trailers must therefore be maintained at the safety inspection frequency declared by the operator. We would therefore suggest that operators review their declared safety inspection interval and, if necessary, update this via their VOL account. Further information for operators about determining their safety inspection interval can be found in DVSA’s Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness, which can be accessed by clicking here.
